Moving House Checklist: What to Do and When (UK)
- No judgement

A checklist should take things out of your head, not give you a new deadline to worry about. Use these stages around your actual moving date. If you have less notice, focus first on bookings, essential paperwork and what you need to live comfortably at the other end.
As soon as you know a move is likely
- Compare removals quotes and clarify packing, insurance, access, parking and what happens if dates change.
- Measure furniture and the new rooms where possible, particularly when downsizing.
- Start sorting belongings you will not take; book donation collections or disposal routes.
- Keep contracts, booking details and questions in one folder. Check key handover arrangements with the relevant professionals.
For the practical sorting method rather than the admin list, read my moving preparation and unpacking guide. If your property will have viewings, use the separate house-sale preparation guide.
In the weeks before moving
- Pack or arrange packing for non-essentials, keeping similar items together.
- Label boxes with the destination room and a useful contents description.
- Check access at both properties, including stairs, lifts and parking requirements.
- Arrange broadband and utility transfers with providers.
- Plan support for children and pets so the day is safe and manageable.
- Tell removals about anything requiring specialist handling.
Who to tell when moving house in the UK
Keep a list and tick off each organisation’s confirmation. Different services have different procedures; a postal redirection does not update your accounts for you.
- Banks, cards, pensions, investments and insurers.
- Employer, schools, GP, dentist and other regular services.
- Old and new councils for council tax, plus water, energy and broadband providers.
- HMRC change of address and relevant benefits services.
- Driving licence address and, separately, vehicle log book address.
- Electoral registration.
- Royal Mail redirection, subscriptions and regular deliveries.
The final few days
- Confirm arrival times and contact numbers.
- Follow appliance instructions for defrosting or preparing equipment.
- Pack bedding, towels, toiletries, chargers, kettle, mugs, tea, basic food and loo roll where you can reach them.
- Keep medicines, documents, keys, valuables and children’s essential comfort items in a bag travelling with you.
- Leave cleaning supplies accessible for a final check.
Moving day
Take and retain meter readings at the appropriate point for both homes, check the old property before leaving and keep essential bags out of the removals load. Direct boxes to labelled rooms and keep walkways clear. Set up beds, bathroom essentials and a usable kitchen area before tackling decorative items.
The first days in your new home
Check that address changes and deliveries are working. Unpack by category rather than filling the first available cupboard; a little thought now helps avoid reorganising everything later. Keep a visible list of remaining jobs, and allow the layout to change as you discover how the new home works.
Frequently asked questions
When should I start preparing for a move?
Start as soon as the move is likely, especially sorting, quotes and access checks. Packing dates depend on your household and whether a packing service is booked; this is a flexible checklist, not a fixed eight-week rule.
Does Royal Mail redirection update my address everywhere?
No. It redirects eligible post. Update your address separately with banks, government services, councils, providers and other organisations.
